Middle English Reading (5 extra-credit points): Choose one of
the portraits in the General Prologue of The Canterbury Tales (excluding
the portraits that we talked about in class). Prepare about ten lines
of the portrait to read out loud in class in the original
Middle English. Be sure to choose a group of lines that constitute
a complete thought; don't break off or begin in mid-sentence. Also,
try to choose a passage that has some interesting features (that really
sums up the character described or that is a good example of Chaucerian
irony, for example). Prepare a word-for-word translation
of your ten or so lines to turn in to me. Also, include with your
translation a brief commentary (1/2 a page at the most) that
explains what you found interesting about the lines you chose.
