Response Paper:  The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Marie de France

How have culture and values changed as a result of the Norman Conquest?  How do the values of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Marie de France compare to the values of Beowulf?

Choose one of the following areas as the focus of your response paper:

1. How does Lanval compare to Beowulf?  What kind of hero is each?  For what are they admired?  Are there any continuities from Beowulf to Lanval?
2. How does the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle seem to define a good king (i.e., as it evaluates William the Conqueror and his successors)?  Is the chronicler's definition of a good king the same as that in Beowulf?  How is it similar and different?
