Paper 4

I have saved the shortest -- and the hardest -- assignment for last.

Research and write a position paper of 1-2 single-spaced pages that makes a definitional argument on a business- or career-related topic of your choice.  You must choose a specific event, situation, trend, or object and make a definitional claim about it (i.e., X is or is not a Y).  I recommend that you choose a topic with real-life relevance for you or for an organization to which you belong (e.g., a topic relevant to The College of New Jersey or to the business where you work).

You might, for example, choose one of the following topics or use them as models for your own topic:

  1. Was an uncomfortable situation that you or a friend experienced recently on the job a case of sexual harassment (as defined by law)?
  2. Do the student recruitment activities of The College of New Jersey qualify as false advertising (as defined by the widely-accepted norms of ethical business practice)?
  3. Are any guns that are currently available for purchase in New Jersey in fact types of gun banned by state law?
  4. Are the disciplinary policies in the dorms a violation of your civil rights?

Remember that a position paper is meant to be a first attempt to move from structured information -- a working outline and research notes -- toward an argument that contains actual positions and recommendations.  It is not a final product but only a summary of the main points you want to make in order to inform your reader of the nature of a project you've been working on.  It's a teaser that is meant to get your reader interested enough to request more information (such as, perhaps, a full-blown report).

Keep in mind that your position paper will be graded based on my usual grading criteria for papers.
