ENGL 497Senior Seminar
Prof. G. Steinberg
Kant is very difficult to read. So, for the purposes of this class, focus just on what Kant has to say about the pleasant, the beautiful, and the sublime.
What makes the beautiful beautiful? How is it different from the merely pleasant, according to Kant?
What does Kant seem to mean by the sublime? What makes something sublime? How is it different from the beautiful?
These questions look simple enough but are not easy to answer. Kant is very difficult. But I have confidence in you. Try to find passages or examples about the beautiful and the sublime that make sense to you, and bring those passages to class for discussion.
