ENGL 497Senior Seminar
Prof. G. Steinberg
In the assignment from Jung, you can focus most of your attention on “On the Relation of Analytical Psychology to Poetry,” but I would like you to read “The Principal Archetypes” as well.
In “On the Relation of Analytical Psychology to Poetry,” Jung describes two different modes of literary creation, but in the end, he thinks that both modes are really more the same than different. Regardless of mode of creation, what role does the unconscious mind play in literature’s creation, according to Jung? What is an autonomous complex and how does it work? What is the personal unconscious? What is the collective unconscious? Which unconscious is more important in the creation of literature, according to Jung?
How are Jung’s ideas about literary creation different from Freud’s?
